Three Terraces of Wuxia Gorge

Chuyang Terrace

Chuyang Terrace, also named Guyang Terrace, lies on Gaoqiu Mountain which is two li (one kilometer) away from the north of Wushan County. It is 100 zhang (1 zhang=3.33 meters) high, facing the Yantze River. It is said that Chu-huai-wang (King Huai of Chu State in the Spring and Autumn Period) once dreamt of meeting Wushan Goddess here, hence obtaining its name. At the middle of the mountain stands a Taoist temple, called Gaotang Temple. It is named after the article "Gaotang Fu" written by Song Yu. Now, the temple has been derelict.

Shoushu Terrace

Shoushu Terrace stands at the foot of Feifeng Mountain and it lies across the river from Goddess Peak. It got the name because it was said that Yaoji (the goddess) once granted Dayu the gobbledygook on this Terrace to let him control the flood.

Zhanlong Terrace

Zhanlong Terrace is situated in Cuokai Gorge which is on the south bank of Yangtze River, 80 li (40 kilometers) off Wushan County and 10 li (5 kilometers) off Daixi Town. The Terrace is semi-loop-shaped. "Zhanlong" means to kill the dragon. According to the legend, Dayu once killed an evil dragon on this Terrace when he was controlling the flood, thus getting the name.

Eight Sceneries of Wuxia Gorge

Ning-He-Wan-Du

Ning-He-Wan-Du (Paddling in Daning River during twilight) is under the Elephant Trunk Hill and is one li (500 meters) away from the east of the city. Here, the green and crystal Daning River flows into the Yangtze River. In sunny days, the sun sets gradually, with evening sunglows shine brightly, hazy mist and fog enveloping the river, the gurgling of paddling and the people's singing. All of these form a beautiful picture of Ning-He-Wan-Du.

Qing-Xi-Yu-Diao

Qing-Xi-Yu-Diao means to fish in the Qing Stream. Qing Stream is 10 li (5 kilometers) away from the south of the Wushan County. It is a mountain stream flowing into the Yangtze River. A lot of bamboos grow between the stream and the stones, together with the rumble of the water, producing very quiet and secluded surroundings-a perfect place for fishing.

Yang-Tai-Mu-Yu

Yang-Tai-Mu-Yu represents the sight of sunset rains. It is on the Gaodu Mountain, 2 li (one kilometer) off the east of Wushan County. Yang-Tai-Mu-Yu is the former address of Chuyang Temple.

Nanling-Chun-Xiao

Nanling Mountain is opposite to the Wushan County, steep and lofty, with lush vegetations on it. On the top of it stands a Taoism temple-Nanling Temple. In spring, the peach blossoms are red and pear flowers are white, waterfall is crystal and water-flow is rapid, with the cocks crowing at the daybreak, presenting a vigorous scene full of breath of spring.

Xi-Xia-Wan-Zhao

In sunset, light is blocked in most parts of Wushan County. But a beam of evening sunglow is shot out of the pillars' crack of Yangliuping. Among the lush green trees, this beam of evening sunglow is very beautiful.

Cheng-Tan-Qiu-Yue

There is a deep pool on the east bank of Ewu Stream (Daning River) on Konghou Bay. It is clear to the bottom with a depth of thousands of chi (1 chi=33.3cm). In autumn, the moon light is particularly bright and the pool is pretty.

Xiu-Feng-Chan-Sha

Xiufeng Temple stands on the Wufeng Mountain, 5 li (2.5 lilometers) away from the northeast of Wushan County. Surround the temple are lush green pines, clouds and birds' singing, which are very tranquil.

Nu-Guan-Zhen-Shi

Nu-Guan-Zhen-Shi is a famous stone on the Nuguan Mountain, four li (two kilometers) away from the northeast of Wushan County. The stone looks like a woman. Ii is said that once there was a wife whose husband was an official in the State of Shu (Sichuan Province) missed her husband very much so she climbed on the mountain and looked to the direction of Shu. She stayed there so long that she became a statue. Then the stone was called Wangfushi.
